Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Metz, France!

As capital of Lorraine, 16th century birthplace of quiche Lorraine, Metz -– sometimes called the Garden City -- graces the Moselle River's eastern banks. Origins precede Roman times, thanks to pivotal location eventually to spawn a nearby autobahn and rail tracks linking Paris, Strasbourg and Brussels. After Charlemagne's death and division of his empire, Metz became capital of Lothar's turf, prospering despite subsequent dynastic battles. Eventually, a stronger, wealthier Metz declared itself an independent republic until taken into France in 1552. In 1870, when Napoleon III's forces surrendered to Kaiser Wilhelm I, Metz was turned over to Germany. It regained liberty in 1918 at the end of WW1. Then came Hitler's 1940 re-annexation, until the Allies liberated Metz in 1944. Now a university town, Metz with its ruins and relics maintains a certain lively atmosphere, blooming with well-kept flower beds and other scenic landscaping.

The Grand Hotel de Metz is within the pedestrian zone, surrounded by cafes and bars near the front entrance. Nearby is the fortified city's main attraction, the great cathedral of Saint–Etienne, built from 1221 to 1516, with stained glass windows spanning periods from shortly after groundbreaking to others designed in 1960 by Marc Chagall. Also within the Lorraine region is the lovely Nancy, home to an ornate city hall, the Musee des Beau Arts and the Musee Historique Lorrain, tracing the region's notable history. Lorraine crystal is produced in Nancy's Daum factory. Besides biking and hiking, recreation within the region includes hot air ballooning and river barging. Metz accommodations range from family-owned inns, bed and breakfasts, and small hotels to well-known national brands like Holiday Inn and Comfort Inn.
